Man with a Fish, 2010
Stephan Balkenhol
In front of main entrance
of Shedd Aquarium, 1200 South Lake Shore Drive
This piece is artist Balkenhol’s first permanent public
installation in America. A German sculptor, he studied at the Hamburg School of
Fine Arts. Best known for his minimalist and conceptual works, his early
sculptures were nudes presented in Roman, Greek and Egyptian styles. In the
1980s, his work began to feature ordinary men and women depicted in common
activities, but with a light-hearted or surprising twist. Such is the approach
to this piece as well as his Small Man
with Giraffe in front of the Hamburg Zoo. This bronze sculpture sprays
water from the fish’s mouth and drips into the reflecting pool below where the
basin has a colorful sea-life image.
