This stainless steel sculpture was a gift from the
University of the Aegean and the University of Cyprus, made possible through
the generosity of Mrs. Rodi Karkazis and the United Hellenic American Congress
in honor of the University of Chicago Centennial in 1992. The title is a quote
from Homer’s Iliad and a reference to
the enduring Hellenic spirit.
Calaboyias, who grew up in a Greek household in
post-World War II America, often combines mythological or cultural references
from his Greek heritage as well as the abstract forms and industrial materials
characteristic of mid-century American sculpture.
