The Athlete, 2005
Terrence Karpowicz
Across the street from
the East Bank Club
500 North Kingsbury
Street
Commissioned for the 25th anniversary of the
East Bank Club by founders Daniel Levin and James McHugh, The Athlete is a whimsical take on bodily movement as well as the
interaction between two types of steel. Terrence Karpowicz (born 1948) has
maintained a studio in Chicago for many years and is known for large-scale
public works that combine organic materials and forms with machined geometric
shapes in a manner that emphasizes the tension created by joints and
intersections. Abstract but dynamic, the cylindrical extensions suggest arms
and legs in motion and the shiny sphere seems destined for release, even though
permanent attached.
