Vietnam
Veterans Memorial, 2005
Gary
Tillery
Wacker Drive at North
State Street on the Riverwalk
This Vietnam Veterans
memorial is one of the largest in the nation outside of those in Washington,
D.C. After design improvements and the reconstruction
of Wacker Drive in 2005, Collins Engineers, Inc. was retained by the Chicago
Department of Transportation to incorporate a memorial at the dock level of
Wacker Drive. Designed by artist Gary Tillery, a Vietnam
veteran, it was dedicated on
Veterans Day, 2005 and features a tiered plaza, waterfall and black granite
block with the names of more than 2,900 Illinois soldiers either killed or
missing in action from all branches of the U.S. military. The stones were
incorporated into this memorial from an earlier memorial and reflecting pool
that had been located on Wacker Drive and dedicated by Mayor Jane Byrne in
1982.
