S. Thomas Scarff
Green space at North
Clark and West Wisconsin Streets
In
the early 2000s, the Old Town Triangle Community worked with the alderman’s
office to convert vacant land once occupied by a gas station into a green space
for the neighborhood. S. Thomas (Tom) Scarff, an artist who splits time between
a studio in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood and Michigan City, Indiana, is
curator-in-residence at Purdue University North Central in Westville, Indiana. This
stainless steel sculpture, previously on that campus, was installed in the new
space. Here, it is a functioning fountain surrounded by a 14-foot steel trellis
crafted by the artist’s son, Seaton Scarff. (At the time of publication, the
trellis was being repaired after high winds toppled the structure during a
storm.)
